Portrait and Figure Drawing and Painting

This continuing portrait and figure class is for both drawing and painting students. One, two, or three session poses with nude and clothed models each quarter. New students are welcome and strongly encouraged to work in charcoal and pencil to build up drawing skills. Continuing students may progress to oil, acrylic, water media or chalk pastel. Drawing and painting topics demonstrated and individually addressed, including basic block-in, composition, measuring, proportion, foreshortening, anatomy, value, color, layering and brushwork.

Painting Still Life With Color and Light

Afternoon painting class emphasizing the use of color and light in painting the still life in oil, chalk pastel or acrylic. Both alla prima (all at once) and indirect layering methods will be explored. Figure Drawing like the Old Masters

Learn the techniques of Titian and other old masters. Using oils (preferred) or acrylics, we will work through the processes of underpainting, grisaille, layering and glazing to achieve a beautiful and timeless three-dimensionality. Previous experience drawing the figure recommended. Previous experience with paint is helpful but not necessary. Come to the first class with materials ready to work. Alla Prima in Oil, Acrylic, or Pastel

Alla prima (Italian for at first attempt) is a method of painting directly, brush stroke on brush stroke, to complete a painting in one or two sessions. Some weeks will be quick studies as well. Working with still life and interiors, we will go through the steps to create luminous paintings. Demonstration and discussion each week. Oil, acrylic or chalk pastel. Beginners and returnees welcome.

Open Studio Figure Drawing & Painting
Studio available for working from the figure, short and long poses, supervised use; no instructor. Participants provide their own supplies. Different model each week). Enrollment limited. Note: mild solvents (i.e. Turpenoid) ok in Monday class. No solvents in Friday class.Age: 14 and up
